The Indian Armed Forces are undertaking multiple initiatives to maintain an edge over adversaries, with improvements in warfighting doctrines, strategies, and concepts based on perceived threats. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan articulated these points during an event in New Delhi on 18 July 18, marking the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
He lauded the heroics of Indian Bravehearts in the Kargil conflict and said besides recalling memories of war, it is also important to look at its aftermath and draw the “right lessons” for the future. Speaking at an event held here to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kargil war, he also said, “We must not repeat the same mistakes”. War and warfare are evolving at a very, very rapid pace. He said that their character and nature are changing rapidly because of technological transformation and ongoing geopolitical flux.
“The memories of sacrifices made by our soldiers must become a part of our national folklore, as indeed it has become with the Kargil war,” Gen Chauhan said. The CDS said bravery and fortitude must continue to inspire future generations of youth and soldiers who join the Indian armed forces. He said that besides recalling memories of war, it is also important to look at its aftermath and draw useful lessons for the future.
Gen Chauhan underscored the ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing warfighting efficiency and effectiveness. These initiatives, which include capability development, infrastructure improvement, and robust operational logistics, are being pursued through indigenous means to build future-ready Armed Forces.
CDS Chauhan stressed the need for the Armed Forces to be prepared for the complexity of modern warfare. He highlighted the inescapable requirement of seamless integration across all domains—land, sea, air, space, information, and cyberspace – and the infusion of interoperable systems among various branches of the Armed Forces.
Reflecting on the Kargil conflict, Gen Chauhan underscored its lessons on the need for a robust and responsive defence strategy. He stressed the importance of public and international diplomacy, which was effectively used to maintain neutrality among inimical nations and gain global support.
Discussing steps toward integrating the Armed Forces, CDS Gen Chauhan noted that the three services are moving beyond jointness to promote a joint culture and integrate across multiple domains.
Acknowledging the Kargil War as India’s first televised war in an environment of free and open media, CDS Gen Chauhan stressed the emergence of the information domain as a critical battle zone in the ongoing narrative warfare shaping global perceptions.
Gen Chauhan concluded by stating that the Kargil War symbolises the resoluteness, selflessness, fierce courage, and determination of the Armed Forces, collectively urging the nation to focus on future threats and challenges.
