The author is a military historian and is author of the official history of 1962 India-China conflict. Served for 22 years in Indian army and commissioned in 1/9Gorkha Rifles of infantry. During the course of service took part in Indo Pak war of 1971 and commanded troops in counterinsurgency operations in Punjab and Kashmir. Served as operational staff officer at divisional, army command, and GHQ level. Deputed to War History division in Ministry of Defence as Joint Director in 1987. The task involved researching and writing the definitive history of all wars fought since independence. Work involved field visits to the entire land borders of India and interviews with participants and perusal of official records.(1987-1990.) Sought and obtained voluntary premature retirement as selection grade Colonel in 1990 to take up a full time research career.
