The Indian Air Force conducted a four-day in-situ air combat exercise with the Royal Thai Air Force in the Indian Ocean Region from February 9 to 12, underscoring growing defence engagement between New Delhi and Bangkok.

The drill saw frontline fighters from both sides operate in coordinated missions over the maritime domain. The IAF deployed its Su-30MKI multirole fighters along with AWACS, AEW&C aircraft and IL-78 mid-air refuelling tankers. The Royal Thai Air Force fielded its Saab Gripen jets.

While the Indian aircraft operated from bases in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Thai Gripens flew from airbases in Thailand. The exercise was carried out in an air combat training format, aimed at sharpening tactical coordination and testing long-range operational capability.

The IAF’s extended reach over the Indian Ocean was enabled by IL-78 refuellers, allowing sustained fighter operations far from the mainland. Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft provided surveillance and command support, while the Thai side employed its Ground Control Interception network for mission coordination.

Officials said the exercise focused on improving interoperability, refining joint tactics and sharing best practices. It also offered operational exposure to crews in a realistic maritime environment.

The engagement comes amid India’s continued push to deepen ties with Southeast Asian partners under its “Act East” policy. Defence cooperation between India and Thailand has expanded steadily in recent years, with air power now emerging as a key pillar of that partnership.
