The 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and Mongolia concluded in Ulaanbaatar on 17 May. The meeting underscored the satisfaction of both parties with the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries. Additionally, the two sides exchanged views on the current geopolitical situation, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.

The two-day meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence (MoD) Amitabh Prasad, and State Secretary of MoD, Mongolia Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj. India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, was also in attendance. Participants reviewed the progress of various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and discussed strategies to further enhance these collaborations.

Joint Secretary Prasad emphasized the potential and capabilities of the Indian defence industry, expressing optimism about a productive partnership with the Mongolian Armed Forces. The Mongolian delegation expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Indian defence sector. Both sides acknowledged the strengthening ties between India and Mongolia, reflecting a deepening of mutual trust and collaboration.

In a significant engagement, the Joint Secretary and the Indian Ambassador met with Deputy Defence Minister of Mongolia, B Bayarmagnai, to discuss bilateral cooperation issues in detail. The Indian delegation also visited a training establishment in Ulaanbaatar to review ongoing engagements, underscoring the practical aspects of the defence cooperation.

India and Mongolia share age-old historical, cultural, and civilizational ties, often referring to each other as ‘Spiritual Neighbours’. In contemporary times, shared values such as democracy, freedom, and a market economy further bind the two nations, facilitating a robust and dynamic partnership.

The 12th JWG meeting marks a continued commitment to strengthening defence relations and exploring new avenues of collaboration between India and Mongolia, the Ministry of Defence said in its statement.
