India on Thursday successfully conducted test flights of two short-range ballistic missiles Prithvi-II and Agni-I from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The launches validated all operational and technical parameters. These tests were conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC),” the statement confirmed. Both trials reportedly met all mission objectives and performance standards.

The Agni-I missile was test-fired from Abdul Kalam Island, followed shortly by the launch of the Prithvi-II missile from Launch Pad No. 3 at the ITR in Chandipur.

About Prithvi-II

The Prithvi-II is a surface-to-surface, short-range ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. It has an operational range of approximately 250–350 km and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads.

Powered by a single-stage liquid propulsion system, Prithvi-II incorporates advanced inertial navigation technology for high-precision targeting. Initially developed for the Indian Air Force, it was later inducted into the Indian Army as well. With a payload capacity ranging between 500 kg and 1,000 kg, the missile is designed to deliver a high degree of accuracy, making it a reliable component of India’s tactical missile arsenal.

About Agni-I

The Agni-I is a road and rail-mobile, short-to-medium range ballistic missile with a strike range of 700–900 km. Developed to bridge the gap between the shorter-range Prithvi series and longer-range Agni missiles, it plays a key role in India’s credible minimum deterrence posture.

Agni-I is capable of delivering a 1,000 kg warhead, including nuclear payloads. The latest variant features an enhanced guidance system for improved accuracy and an upgraded warhead for greater destructive power. First test-fired in 2002, the missile was inducted into service with the Strategic Forces Command in 2007.
