The Indian Army has received the first batch of 35,000 India-assembled Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles from Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture based in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. IRRPL is responsible for manufacturing these weapons. The total order is for 670,000 rifles.
Production has been deployed in India in full compliance with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan (Self-Reliant India) programmes. The project includes 100% technology transfer (ToT), and its concept includes localisation of AK-203 production. This collaborative venture, the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited, established with the involvement of Rosoboronexport from Russia, has completed the initial phase of the project to produce AK-203 Kalashnikov assault rifles within India. All essential equipment has been delivered to the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, to enhance localisation, and the company claims the production facilities are fully operational. This development underscores the commitment to leveraging indigenous resources and manufacturing capabilities.
This development enabled the company to manufacture and deliver a shipment of 35,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles to the Indian Army within the agreed timeframe with the Ministry of Defence of India. The Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifle is a variant of the AK-200 rifle designed for the 7.62x39mm cartridge utilised by the Indian Army. The weapon possesses the traditional strengths of Kalashnikov assault rifles, including reliability and ease of maintenance.
The AK-203 rifles on the assembly line in India are produced in accordance with exclusive Russian technologies using state-of-the-art certified equipment. This meticulous process guarantees that the rifles meet the highest standards of product quality and adhere rigorously to the specified characteristics.
