Indonesia has entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos missile, according to the Indonesian defence ministry, marking a significant step in Jakarta’s efforts to strengthen its maritime strike capabilities.

Defence ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait told Reuters on Monday that the agreement forms part of Indonesia’s broader military modernisation programme, particularly aimed at enhancing defence capabilities in the maritime domain. He, however, declined to disclose the value of the agreement.

BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia, produces the BrahMos missile. In 2023, the company indicated it was in advanced discussions with Jakarta on a potential deal valued between $200 million and $350 million.

Defence Ministry sources here said the contract is expected to be formally signed within the next two to three months.

Negotiations between the two countries gathered momentum during Indonesia’s Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin’s visit to India in November last year. During the visit, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented his Indonesian counterpart with a model of the BrahMos missile, signalling the progress of discussions.

If concluded, Indonesia will become the second overseas customer for the missile after the Philippines, which signed a contract for three batteries in 2022.

Last week, General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, indicated that Indonesia had moved ahead with the purchase while speaking on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in New Delhi.

“The Philippines was the first country to buy the BrahMos missile systems. Now Indonesia has bought the same system,” he said. “We’re happy with our purchase, and hopefully we can do more business with India.”

Despite the remarks, India has not yet made an official announcement regarding the deal.

According to defence sources, export versions of the BrahMos missile are capped at a range of 290 km. Designed for multiple roles including anti-ship strikes, coastal defence and land attack missions, the missile can travel at nearly three times the speed of sound, making it the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missile.

The system was developed through a joint venture established in 1998 between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya.
