After the recent appointments of a new Cabinet Secretary and Union Home Secretary, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved 18 appointments at the Secretary level across various ministries. Among these appointments, Rajesh Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, is set to take over as the Defence Secretary.

Further, Sanjeev Kumar, a 1993-batch Maharashtra cadre officer and the current Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman has been appointed the Department of Defence Production Secretary. This position has been vacant for quite some time. Giridhar Aramane, the current Defence Secretary, and his predecessor Ajay Kumar have been in additional charge of defence production, a position previously held by Kumar.

Singh, who serves as Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry will initially assume the role of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Ministry of Defence. He will then take over as Defence Secretary after the incumbent Secretary Giridhar Aramane’s tenure ends on October 31 this year. Due to retire later this, Singh’s tenure as Defence Secretary has been extended until 31 October 2026, beyond the age of superannuation.

These appointments mark the first major reshuffle in the Modi government’s third term. They coincide with the retirement of officers in several ministries, resulting in the appointment of new agriculture, expenditure, banking, corporate affairs, and health secretaries, among others.
