DGMO Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai called on Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla

Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army, visited Manipur on February 24 and 25 to assess the security situation along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB) and review ongoing border infrastructure developments in the state.

During his visit, Lt Gen Ghai met with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the State Security Advisor, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police. His discussions focused on the Indian Army’s operational preparedness, the evolving security landscape along the IMB, and the overall stability of the state, including its fringe areas.

Emphasizing a ‘whole-of-government’ approach, Lt Gen Ghai underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between military and civil authorities to enhance border management and strengthen security infrastructure. His visit reinforced the commitment to a collaborative strategy to restore normalcy and ensure long-term stability in Manipur, according to Indian Army statement.

Manipur Governor Urges Surrender of Illegal Arms Within Seven Days

In a significant development, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on February 20 urged residents to voluntarily surrender looted and illegally held arms within seven days. His appeal came shortly after the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9 amid ongoing ethnic unrest.

Following the Governor’s call, a substantial number of arms and ammunition were surrendered within a day. Bhalla urged all communities, both in the valley and the hills, to return weapons to restore peace. He assured that no punitive action would be taken against those who comply within the given timeframe, but warned of strict enforcement measures thereafter.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, with efforts underway to stabilize the region and reinforce security along the border.
