The Indian Army has renamed 246 roads, buildings and facilities across its establishments, replacing colonial-era names with titles drawn from India’s military history.

Officials said the revised nomenclature honours gallantry awardees, battle heroes and distinguished military leaders. The move is aimed at reinforcing values of courage, sacrifice and leadership within the force.

The exercise covers 124 roads, 77 residential colonies, 27 buildings and military facilities, and 18 other sites, including parks, training areas, sports grounds, gates and helipads.

The renaming is part of the Army’s wider effort to align its institutional spaces with India’s military traditions and national ethos. It also complements ongoing initiatives to recognise bravery and supreme sacrifice, including sustained efforts to honour Param Vir Chakra awardees.

Several British-era names have been replaced across cantonments and military stations. In Delhi Cantonment, Kirby Place has been renamed Kenuguruse Vihar, while Mall Road is now Arun Khetrapal Marg. Ambala Cantonment’s Patterson Road Quarters has become Dhan Singh Thapa Enclave, and New Horn Line in Mathura Cantonment is now Abdul Hamid Lines.

In Jaipur Cantonment, Queens Line Road has been renamed Sundar Singh Marg. Bareilly Cantonment’s New Birdwood Line is now Thimayya Colony, while Malcolm Lines in Mhow Cantonment has been rechristened Piru Singh Lines.

At the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Colins Block is now Nubra Block, and Kingsway Block has been renamed Kargil Block. In Kolkata, Fort William has been renamed Vijay Durg.

Other changes include the Sports Complex at Rangapahar Military Station, now named the Laishram Jyotin Singh Sports Complex, and Spear Lake Marg at Zakhama Military Station, which has been renamed Hangpan Dada Marg.

Officials said the renamed sites commemorate exemplary service and leadership across different operations and campaigns. The initiative, they added, embeds India’s military heritage into the Army’s living, training and working spaces.
