Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released Defence Forces Vision 2047, outlining plans to transform the Indian military

Amid the Gulf War and following months of Operation Sindoor, India launched a vision document outlining reforms, capability upgrades, and organisational changes to prepare the Indian military for future security challenges.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the roadmap – “Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military,” on Tuesday in the capital. The document lays out a long-term blueprint to transform the armed forces into an integrated, agile, and technologically advanced force capable of deterring adversaries and responding effectively across the full spectrum of conflict.

“The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) has articulated this comprehensive blueprint to transform the defence forces into a modern, integrated, and technologically advanced military capable of supporting India’s aspiration to become a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” according to the Defence Ministry statement.

According to the Defence Ministry, the Vision 2047 document identifies a range of strategic reforms and capability priorities needed to address the rapidly evolving geopolitical and technological environment. It stresses the need to prepare the military for multi-domain operations spanning land, air, sea, cyber and space.

A key pillar of the roadmap is deeper jointness among the Army, Navy and Air Force, with an emphasis on closer coordination in planning, operations and capability development. The document also calls for organisational changes to support integrated operations and improve overall military effectiveness.

Another major focus area is self-reliance in defence production. The roadmap highlights the importance of developing and deploying indigenous technologies tailored to India’s security requirements, in line with the government’s push for Atmanirbharta in defence manufacturing.

Strengthening domestic defence industry capabilities, the ministry said, is expected to enhance operational readiness while also contributing to economic growth and technological innovation.

The document outlines a phased roadmap with clearly defined short-, medium- and long-term capability goals. These priorities are expected to guide military modernisation, institutional reforms and strategic partnerships in the coming decades.

Recognising the complexity of emerging threats, the vision also advocates a “whole-of-nation” approach to national security—integrating military capability with diplomatic, technological and economic instruments of power.

The Ministry said the roadmap is intended to ensure that by 2047, the centenary of India’s independence, the country’s armed forces emerge as a globally respected, technologically advanced and combat-ready force capable of safeguarding national interests and supporting the vision of a developed India.
