Uttar Pradesh is taking significant steps to strengthen its defence and aerospace technology sector by launching three new defence testing facilities under the UP Defence Corridor. The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) will execute three key projects under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS), funded by the Ministry of Defence at the centre. These initiatives can potentially improve the current defence technology testing infrastructure substantially, addressing key shortcomings and paving the way for a more robust defence ecosystem in the state.
The DTIS projects in Uttar Pradesh will receive significant financial support, with a total budget of over Rs 117 crore. The central government provides a 75% grant, while the Uttar Pradesh administration will contribute 25%. This funding model is not just about financial support, but it reflects a collaborative effort where both the central government and the Uttar Pradesh administration are equally invested in strengthening
defence capabilities.
The Defense Testing and Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS) spearheads cutting-edge research and development initiatives to revolutionise testing technologies for defence applications. This forward-looking initiative will provide crucial recommendations and expert guidance for enhancing testing facilities and ensuring the highest quality and standards in defence production. At its core, DTIS is driven by the mission to bolster indigenous defence manufacturing, with a particular emphasis on empowering MSMEs and startups, thus effectively addressing the current shortcomings in defence testing infrastructure. These transformative projects are set to play a pivotal role in developing the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor.
Several significant investments are being made to support various initiatives in Uttar Pradesh:
- MIDHANI (Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited) is slated to establish a state-of-the-art mechanical and material testing facility in Lucknow with a substantial investment of over Rs 40 crore.
- Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is set to invest over Rs 31 crore in setting up a cutting-edge communication testing facility at IIT Kanpur.
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to launch an advanced Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) testing facility at IIT Kanpur.
The concerted efforts of the Union and state governments, in collaboration with major industry players, are poised to elevate Uttar Pradesh as a pivotal centre for defence and space technology. These initiatives will significantly bolster the state’s defence infrastructure, thereby contributing to India’s overarching self-reliance mission.
