Humanitarian Aid Or Geopolitics? India’s Growing Global Role

July 11, 2026

India has launched Operation Amistad to provide humanitarian assistance to Venezuela in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake, once again demonstrating its commitment to standing with countries in times of crisis. The mission includes the rapid deployment of relief supplies and emergency assistance, reinforcing India’s reputation as a reliable humanitarian partner.

But is Operation Amistad merely a relief mission, or does it represent something much larger?

In this week’s Defence Mantra, we examine how humanitarian assistance has evolved into an important instrument of diplomacy, strategic outreach and international engagement. As global powers increasingly use disaster relief to build partnerships and strengthen influence, where does India’s approach fit into the evolving geopolitical landscape?

The discussion also traces India’s journey as a humanitarian responder — from major relief operations such as Operation Maitri in Nepal following the 2015 earthquake and Operation Dost in Türkiye after the 2023 earthquake, to numerous evacuation and disaster relief missions across the Indian Ocean Region and beyond. These operations have contributed to India’s growing reputation as the region’s “First Responder” — a nation capable of delivering timely assistance while reinforcing trust and long-term partnerships.

BharatShakti’s Founder and Editor-in-Chief Nitin Gokhale explores whether humanitarian missions should be viewed simply as an expression of soft power or as an extension of national security and foreign policy. More importantly, the conversation reflects on what operations like Amistad reveal about India’s aspirations as a responsible global power — one that increasingly combines compassion with capability, and humanitarian values with strategic purpose.
