India’s military restructuring plan is nearing approval as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General N.S. Raja Subramani, is set to present the final integrated theatre command blueprint to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Once cleared by the minister, the proposal will go to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final approval.
The Indian Army is in the midst of an important phase of organisational transformation, with reforms aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and preparing the force for future challenges. Among these developments, the concept of Integrated Battle Groups (IBGs) has emerged as one of the most significant changes in the Army’s approach to warfighting.
In this episode of Defence Mantra, we examine the concept of Integrated Battle Groups (IBGs) and place it within the broader context of the proposed theaterisation process. The episode explains why the Indian Army is moving towards the IBG model, how these formations differ from existing structures, and the role they are expected to play as the Army adapts to changing operational requirements.
The discussion also explores the relationship between Integrated Battle Groups and Integrated Theatre Commands. As India moves towards greater jointness among the three services, understanding the purpose of IBGs becomes an important part of understanding the Army’s future direction. This episode examines how the two concepts connect and why both are viewed as key components of the Army’s ongoing transformation.
