Bharat Forge has supplied 100 artillery guns—including 18 Advanced Towed Artillery Guns (ATAGs)—to several countries, including those in Europe, company Chairman Baba Kalyani announced at a recent press conference. Notably, the company exported these guns to Europe even before delivering them to the Indian Army.

“Last year, we delivered 100 artillery guns to a European country, including 18 ATAGs,” Kalyani said. “There is growing interest from countries around the world in the artillery systems we manufacture.”

He emphasized that India is now not only capable of producing advanced artillery systems domestically but is also successfully exporting them to developed nations, including those in Europe. “It’s a great feeling to see India emerge as a credible defence exporter,” he said, adding that Bharat Forge sees immense global opportunities in this space.

“Our goal is to become the largest artillery producer in the world—hopefully by 2030,” he stated. “To achieve that, we are building substantial manufacturing capacity.”

Bharat Forge currently manufactures a wide range of artillery systems, including ultralight howitzers (ULHs), and is actively developing next-generation systems with advanced capabilities. “We are working on artillery guns that can fire on the move,” Kalyani revealed.

He said exports accounted for nearly 90% of the company’s defence sales last year. This year, export revenue is expected to make up around 80%. “The global defence market is opening up for us. We aspire to become a trusted supplier to the U.S. Army, the French Army, the British Army, and other leading defence forces,” he said.

Commenting on the current state of global defence production, Kalyani noted that many countries are facing severe shortages of defence equipment and manufacturing capacity. “While these nations undoubtedly possess cutting-edge technology—often superior to ours—the real bottleneck lies in production. The massive consumption of equipment in the Ukraine war has created an urgent need for replenishment,” he explained.
