Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Siachen on Monday, which is considered the world’s highest battlefield, to assess the security situation firsthand. During his visit, he interacted with the soldiers deployed in extremely harsh weather and difficult terrain conditions. After conducting an aerial reconnaissance, Singh landed at a forward post at 15,100 feet. He was accompanied by Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, and General Officer Commanding 14 Corps Lieutenant General Rashim Bali.Â
There, he received a detailed briefing on the operational readiness in the Siachen Glacier and the current security situation. He also discussed the operational challenges with the Commanders who were present on the ground.
During his address to the soldiers, the Minister not only highlighted the strategic importance of Siachen but also expressed his deep admiration for their courage and determination. He described Siachen as a symbol of India’s sovereignty and unwavering determination, comparing its significance to that of Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. He emphasized that Siachen is the capital of courage, grit, and determination, a title earned by the soldiers who serve there.
The nation recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of Operation Meghdoot’s success. Singh termed the operation, launched by the Indian Army in Siachen on 13 April 1984, a golden chapter of the country’s military history. “The success of Operation Meghdoot is a matter of pride for all of us,” he said.Â
As a mark of respect and gratitude, the Defence Minister also laid a wreath at the Siachen War Memorial. This solemn act was a tribute to the Bravehearts who have made the supreme sacrifice in service of the motherland, a poignant reminder of the price of freedom and security.
On 24 March this year, Singh traveled to Leh and joined the troops in celebrating Holi. Although he had planned to visit Siachen earlier, the trip was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. From Leh, he spoke to the soldiers stationed in Siachen over the phone and assured them of his upcoming visit to the world’s highest battlefield to interact with them.
