As a cinematographer embarking on a journey to capture the essence of “Exercise Vayu Shakti 2024” on 17th Feb, I was filled with anticipation and excitement. Armed with my camera and lenses, I set out to document the sheer spectacle and grandeur of the Indian Air Force’s prowess at the Pokhran range near Jaisalmer.
From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere crackled with energy and anticipation. The Pokhran range, steeped in history and significance, provided the perfect backdrop for what promised to be an unforgettable display of air power. As I set up my equipment, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of privilege at being able to witness such an event firsthand.
Those present included chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, several top military officials and defence attaches of various countries.
As the exercise began, the skies came alive with the roar of jet engines and the thunderous applause of explosions. The Rafale jet, the Apache attack helicopter, and the indigenous Prachand light combat helicopter took centre stage, their sleek forms cutting through the air with precision and grace. With every manoeuvre, I found myself transfixed, my camera capturing every moment in vivid detail.
As the demonstration unfolded, I was struck by the seamless coordination and precision of the IAF’s operations. From precision air-to-ground strikes to rapid troop deployments, every aspect of the exercise was executed with meticulous care and expertise. It was a sight to behold, and I felt a surge of pride knowing that these were the guardians of our skies, protecting our nation with unwavering resolve.
The highlight of the event came when the Apache attack helicopter demonstrated its firepower, engaging targets with pinpoint accuracy. The deafening roar of its cannons and the trail of smoke left in its wake were a testament to the formidable capabilities of the IAF. As I framed each shot, I couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer power and precision of these machines of war.
But amidst the spectacle and awe, there was also a profound sense of humility. I realised that behind every aircraft, every pilot, and every mission, there were countless hours of training, dedication, and sacrifice. It was a reminder of the immense responsibility borne by those who serve in the armed forces, defending our nation with courage and conviction.
As the sun set and darkness descended upon the desert, the intensity of the operations only seemed to grow. The night sky was ablaze with the fiery trails of rockets and the brilliant bursts of flares, a mesmerising display of firepower and precision. It was a moment I knew I would never forget, captured forever through the lens of my camera.
As I packed up my equipment and prepared to leave, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a remarkable display of air power, and gratitude for the brave men and women of the Indian Air Force who stand guard over our skies, protecting our nation with unwavering courage and dedication.
As I reflect on the extraordinary experience of capturing “Vayu Shakti 2024” through my lens, I am filled with immense respect to Nitin A. Gokhale for providing me with the opportunity to witness such a remarkable event. His trust in my abilities as a cinematographer and his unwavering support throughout the journey have been invaluable, and I am truly honoured to have been a part of this unforgettable experience.
In the end, Exercise Vayu Shakti 2024 was more than just a military demonstration, it was a testament to the strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment of the Indian Air Force. And as I looked back on the footage captured through my lens, I knew that I had been privileged to witness history in the making, a tribute to the indomitable spirit of our armed forces, and a celebration of the power of the human spirit to soar to new heights.
