The Indian Navy marked a significant milestone today with the launch of ‘Tavasya,’ the second frigate of Project 1135.6 Additional Follow-on Ships, at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on March 22. The vessel, built indigenously, underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

‘Tavasya’ derives its name from the mace of the legendary warrior Bhima from the Mahabharata, symbolizing the indomitable spirit and growing strength of the Indian Navy. Indian Navy conducted the launch ceremony in the presence of Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh.

Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted the significance of the launch, stating, “This is a defining moment in India’s naval history, showcasing our technological capabilities and unwavering commitment to self-reliance.” He further emphasized the successful localization of critical components, including the BrahMos missile system, torpedo launchers, sonar, and auxiliary control systems, as a testament to India’s growing shipbuilding capabilities.

The contract for the construction of two Project 1135.6 follow-on frigates was signed between the Ministry of Defence and Goa Shipyard Limited on January 25, 2019. The first ship of the project, ‘Triput,’ was launched on July 23, 2024. Both vessels are designed for surface, sub-surface, and air combat operations, with stealth features, advanced weapon systems, and cutting-edge platform management systems.

With a length of 124.8 meters, a width of 15.2 meters, and a draught of 4.5 meters, ‘Triput’ and ‘Tavasya’ displace approximately 3,600 tons and can achieve a top speed of 28 knots. Notably, a significant percentage of the frigates’ equipment, weapons, and sensors are of indigenous origin, reinforcing India’s defence production ecosystem and contributing to employment and capability enhancement within the country.

The launch of ‘Tavasya’ marks another step forward in India’s strategic defence ambitions, reinforcing the nation’s maritime prowess and commitment to strengthening its naval forces through indigenous shipbuilding.
