A new frontier in military training was launched to prepare the Indian Armed Forces for the future on 23 September. The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff is conducting a tri-services ‘Future Warfare’ course in New Delhi under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. This course is unique because it is open to officers from major generals to majors and their equivalent levels in other services, regardless of rank. The course aims to familiarize the officers with modern warfare’s operational and technological aspects, ensuring that they are well-prepared for future challenges.
We are curating a future warfare course; it’s rank-agnostic and involves all the three Services: CDS General Anil Chauhan.

The Defence Ministry has announced that the upcoming course will focus on key areas related to future warfare. The goal is to develop an understanding of how future wars will take shape, whether they will involve contact, non-contact, kinetic, non-kinetic, psychological or informational tactics. The course will also examine the different domains in which these wars may be fought, such as cyber, space, or the electromagnetic spectrum. It will also shed light on how emerging and disruptive technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, robotics, and hypersonics will impact how warfare is conducted.
The need for a Future Warfare Course for Tri-Services officers arises from the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare, driven by technological advancements, changing global dynamics, and emerging threats, as per the Ministry’s statement. Officers must be equipped to navigate this complex landscape, leveraging new technologies and adapting to innovative tactics.
“The course will foster jointness and facilitate the development of a cohesive, futuristic, and tech-savvy force capable of securing national interests in an increasingly uncertain and competitive environment,” said MoD.
The course has been developed by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff with the assistance of veteran and serving subject matter experts. Future courses will expand on the curriculum of this course and be longer in duration, aiming to make the Indian Armed Forces “Future Ready.”
