Flying Through the Storm: India’s First Woman IAF Gallantry Award Winner

When rising floodwaters trapped hundreds in Madhya Pradesh in 2021, one helicopter broke through stormy skies to reach them. At its controls was Wing Commander Deepika Misra, who went on to become the first woman officer of the Indian Air Force to receive the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).

In this episode of Women in Defence, she recounts what it was like to be the lone first responder, facing low visibility, strong winds, and fading daylight—yet flying on to save 47 lives over eight intense days of rescue operations. From aerial reconnaissance to winching operations in flooded areas, her calm courage and professionalism stood out under pressure.

She speaks about what keeps her grounded: “The machine doesn’t know who’s flying—it only responds to how well you’ve trained your mind.” A flying instructor and instrument-rated examiner, Wg Cdr Misra’s story is a reflection of excellence, leadership, and quiet determination.

Watch her journey—from a young girl inspired by her uncle to a decorated helicopter pilot who proved that courage knows no gender, only purpose.
