Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to participate in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Malaysia

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh leaves for Kuala Lumpur today to attend the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) scheduled on November 1. He will address the forum on “Reflection on 15 Years of ADMM-Plus and Charting the Way Forward.”

Ahead of the main session, Singh will participate in the ASEAN-India Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting on October 31, chaired by Malaysia. The dialogue will bring together Defence Ministers from all ASEAN countries to enhance regional security cooperation and reinforce India’s Act East Policy.

During the two-day visit, Singh is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from ADMM-Plus member nations and senior Malaysian leadership, the Defence Ministry said.

ADMM-Plus is a key platform that brings together ten ASEAN nations — Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam — along with eight dialogue partners, including India, the US, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

India, which became an ASEAN dialogue partner in 1992, has been an active participant in the ADMM-Plus framework since its inception in 2010. The meeting has been held annually since 2017 to bolster defence and security cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.

Under the current cycle (2024–2027), India and Malaysia co-chair the Experts Working Group on Counter-Terrorism, while the next ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise is planned for 2026.

In a post on X, Rajnath Singh said he looks forward to “meaningful discussions with ADMM-Plus nations on greater cooperation across a wide range of areas” and to engaging with Malaysia’s senior leadership during the visit.
