In an era of geopolitical volatility and technological disruption, India is emerging as a key hub for global defence partnerships.

This was the focus of a panel discussion moderated by Amitabh Revi, Deputy Editor, StratNewsGlobal.com, titled “Strategic Partnerships in an Uncertain World.” The session brought together industry leaders: Dr. Vivek Lall (General Atomics Global Corporation), Roderick McLean (Lockheed Martin), Andleeb Shadman (Hensoldt India), and Venkat Katkuri (Airbus Defence & Space, India & South Asia).

Setting the Stage

Revi opened the discussion emphasizing the importance of trust and technology in uncertain times. He framed India as not just a buyer of defence systems but a strategic partner capable of co-developing advanced capabilities. He also highlighted Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) as a key consideration, stressing the need for collaboration that respects foreign IP while fostering local innovation.

Dr. Vivek Lall – Technology and Operational Certainty

Lall stressed that in today’s volatile environment, reliable technology is a strategic asset. Unmanned aircraft, advanced sensors, and AI-powered systems are not just tools, they are force multipliers. He highlighted the trend of moving beyond buyer-seller relationships toward co-development and local manufacturing, ensuring that India is an active participant in the innovation chain.

Andleeb Shadman – Local Capability and IPR

The critical role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was highlighted by Shadman. He explained that true partnerships involve sharing know-how, co-developing technology, and enabling Indian companies to create foreground IP rather than just assembling imported components. Shadman stressed that IPR clarity is essential for long-term industrial growth and innovation.

Venkat Katkuri – Europe-India Collaboration and Policy Alignment

He discussed Europe’s growing recognition of India as a strategic, trusted partner. From sensor systems to aerospace solutions, collaborations are expanding into industrial integration and joint development. He also highlighted the need for policy clarity and speed in approvals, ensuring that Indian and European industrial ecosystems can collaborate efficiently.

Key Takeaways
