Operation Sindoor: Lessons In Military Jointness And Deterrence

0

Operation Sindoor” launched on the night of 6th May, early 7th morning last year, as a direct response to the April 22nd terror attack in Pahalgam, illustrated India’s shift from a doctrine of “cold start” to “cold strike,” Vice Admiral SJ Singh (Retd), former Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command told Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale.

The strategic objective of Op Sindoor was clear: to hit terrorists in their own homes and send a clear message to their sponsors that terrorism will be met with swift and appropriate response, he added.

Op Sindoor also validated the immense strides India has made in military integration. Far from operating in silos, the Army, Air Force, and Navy executed joint contingency planning, sophisticated target matching, and collaborative wargaming to execute the operation successfully.

Highlighting India’s use of the calibrated escalation ladder, Admiral Singh noted how the operation was managed through a deliberate cycle of counter, hit, pause, and strike. The strategy had built in “off-ramps,” giving Pakistan the opportunity to de-escalate and sue for peace.

The short 5-day operation stands as a defining moment of India’s politico-military synergy, showcasing a highly calibrated counter-terror strategy, unprecedented maritime readiness, and seamless tri-service jointness, he added.

Admiral Singh noted that India’s defence policy is designed to prevent forever wars, and the military purposefully paused the operation once its strategic objectives were met and the message was delivered.

“Op Sindoor” is at a pause, and has not ended, and the Indian armed forces remain in a state of high readiness, prepared to activate and pinpoint targets at any time if Pakistan’s state-sponsored terrorism resumes, he added.
