In a noteworthy development to fortify a strategic alliance, Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and State Secretary, German Ministry of Defence Mr. Benedikt Zimmer co-chaired the India-Germany High Defence Committee (HDC) meeting in Berlin on the 27th of February, 2024.
The gathering, aimed at discussing bilateral security and defence concerns, underscored the development of defence cooperation as a pivotal aspect of the relationship between the two nations. During the meeting, both parties exchanged perspectives on the regional security landscape and explored potential joint exercises with Germany in the Indo-Pacific region. They also deliberated on various defence industrial projects and proposals, emphasising the necessity for a closer defence partnership and fostering collaboration between their respective defence industries.
A primary focus of the meeting was the collaboration in high technology in defence, which is anticipated to catalyse innovation and enhance the capabilities of both countries’ armed forces. This collaboration aligns with the visit of German Federal Minister of Defence Mr. Boris Pistorius to India in 2023, which further solidified the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Following the HDC meeting, Shri Giridhar Aramane engaged with a distinguished German Research Institute, the German Institute of International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik – SWP) based in Berlin City. This interaction highlights the significance of knowledge exchange and intellectual cooperation between India and Germany as they work together to confront global security challenges. The India-Germany High Defence Committee meeting exemplifies the commitment of both nations to deepen their defence ties and contribute to regional and global peace and stability. The collaboration in high technology is expected to pave the way for further advancements in defence capabilities and strengthen the strategic partnership between India and Germany.
The India-Germany relationship has been on the upswing. The meeting at the Secretary level is expected to give it further boost. Both countries have adequate convergence in their views on the Indian Ocean Region. Stability in the region is a priority for both countries.
