During the Eurosatory 2024 defence exhibition in Paris, India’s state-of-the-art military technologies have captured the interest of European and Southeast Asian nations in acquiring advanced systems. One such standout is the Netra airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, developed by the Centre for Airborne Systems, equipped with cutting-edge radar and communication systems, providing extensive coverage of enemy activities along India’s western and northern fronts. Additionally, the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems, known for their precision and versatility, have also attracted keen interest. These systems are showcased at the India pavilion during the ongoing Eurosatory 2024 defence show in Paris, held from 17 to 21 June.
A defence official privy to the development said, “Several European and Southeast Asian countries have shown strong interest in the Netra AEW&C aircraft and the Pinaka rocket launcher systems. We are looking forward to engaging in constructive discussions with potential customers to further the adoption of these advanced products,” as reported by news agency ANI.
The AEWC system, a product of the Centre for Airborne Systems, has demonstrated its effectiveness with two aircraft in active service with the Indian Air Force. This deployment provides extensive coverage of adversaries’ activities along the country’s western and northern fronts. The Indian forces are set to receive 12 more airborne systems in various configurations.
Additionally, the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems, developed by the DRDO and manufactured by various private and public sector firms, have gained domestic recognition and attracted interest from several European countries, underscoring their potential for international export. The weapon system is one of the first few Indian military terms to have been exported to foreign countries, including Armenia.
The strategic artillery modernisation plans of the Indian army require 23 regiments of the Pinaka MBRL. The project involves private sector companies such as Larsen & Toubro, Tata Defence, and Economic Explosives Limited.
India has been focusing on promoting defence exports, with export figures reaching a record Rs 21,083 crore (about USD 2.63 billion) in the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24, marking a 32.5% growth compared to the previous year’s Rs 15,920 crore. This growth is attributed to factors such as the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, increased foreign direct investment, and the rising global demand for India’s defence products and services. The data shows a remarkable 31-fold increase in defence exports over the last decade, highlighting the strength and potential of India’s defence industry.
Indian companies have successfully expanded their reach, securing international customers for a range of indigenous systems. Notably, amidst the ongoing tensions with Azerbaijan, Armenia has placed orders for multiple systems, highlighting the value and effectiveness of these products on a global scale.
