In a significant development, General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff of India, and General Said Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation. General Anil Chauhan led a high-ranking Indian military delegation to Algeria from October 31 to November 3, aiming to strengthen growing trade, education, technology, and defence collaboration partnerships.
“This Memorandum represents not only a step forward in bilateral military cooperation but also lays down the foundation for long-term collaboration across a variety of sectors,” stated Defence Ministry in its statement.

Gen Chauhan engaged with senior officers of the People’s National Army, emphasizing the shared history between the two nations and the strong bond founded on shared values and principles. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) highlighted the importance of geography in Algeria, relating it to India’s global aspirations. He stated, “The core strategic outlook of a nation is shaped by its geography and historical experience.”
CDS called for peaceful resolution of global conflicts. He said, “India always supports peaceful resolution to global conflicts. India has re-established its Defence Wing in Algeria and welcomes the re-opening of Defence Wing of Algeria in India”.
General Chauhan highlighted that the Indian Armed Forces are undergoing significant transformation and expressed India’s readiness to share these experiences with Algeria’s People’s National Army. He emphasized India’s growing defence production capabilities under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for the World’ initiatives, which aim to bolster Indigenous manufacturing and expand India’s role as a global defence supplier.
India and Algeria are committed to self-determination, respect for sovereignty, and mutual support in multilateral settings. As regional leaders in South Asia and North Africa, the two nations bring distinct strategic advantages to their partnership, supporting a more balanced and multipolar global order. This high-level visit also complements the recent state visit by the President of India to Algeria, signalling robust political will on both sides to deepen diplomatic, military, and strategic cooperation.
