At the 13th Malaysia-India Defence Cooperation Committee (MIDCOM) meeting held in Kuala Lumpur on February 19, India and Malaysia reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral defence ties, highlighting the steady growth of military engagements between the two nations in recent years.
Co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Malaysia’s Defence Ministry Secretary General Lokman Hakim Bin Ali, the discussions covered a wide range of initiatives aimed at expanding defence cooperation through practical and effective measures. Both sides also identified emerging domains such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) as key areas for enhanced collaboration.
Singh underscored the strength of India’s defence industry, emphasizing its potential to support Malaysia’s armed forces in capability enhancement and modernization through industrial partnerships.
Reaffirming their commitment to fully implement new initiatives under the defence pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two countries aligned their efforts with the vision set by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the latter’s visit to India in August 2024.

A major outcome of the meeting was the exchange of finalised Terms of Reference (ToR) for the establishment of the Strategic Affairs Working Group. This group is designed to serve as an intermediate consultative mechanism between MIDCOM and its subcommittees to advance all aspects of defence cooperation.
Additionally, both sides formalized the creation of a Su-30 Forum aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Indian and Malaysian Air Forces. The forum will facilitate the exchange of expertise and best practices in Su-30 aircraft maintenance, enhancing operational efficiency and interoperability.
The meeting underscored the growing synergy between India and Malaysia in the defence sector, paving the way for deeper strategic collaboration in the years ahead.
