In an exclusive interview with BharatShakti, Lt Gen Sadhna S. Nair, the Director General of the Indian Army’s Medical Services, sheds light on her mission to modernise military healthcare. Tasked with ensuring the well-being of soldiers, veterans, and their families, Lt Gen Nair emphasises the crucial role of technology in improving healthcare delivery—especially in remote areas.

Under her leadership, the Indian Army has expanded telemedicine services, leveraging AI for diagnosis and treatment. With over 50 telemedicine nodes and enhanced digital connectivity, soldiers stationed in isolated locations can now receive timely medical consultations. She also highlights how mobile applications and real-time monitoring tools are enhancing combat medical support.

Mental health remains a priority, with initiatives aimed at de-stigmatising psychological care. The Army has established wellness centers, psychological counseling services, and a confidential helpline to ensure soldiers have access to mental health support. Recognising that family plays a key role in a soldier’s well-being, she stresses the importance of involving loved ones in mental health awareness efforts.

The conversation also covers preparedness for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, and improvements in military hospital infrastructure. Additionally, Lt Gen Nair discusses military medical ethics, underscoring the importance of equitable treatment, even in conflict zones.

Her leadership marks a pivotal phase for the Army Medical Corps, focusing on systemic, sustainable changes to strengthen both physical and mental resilience in the armed forces.
