On the eve of International Women’s Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a gender-inclusive armed force. Interacting via video conference with two Indian Navy officers currently undertaking a challenging round-the-world sailing expedition, he lauded their courage and resilience, encouraging more young women to pursue defence and adventure sports careers.
Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, part of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II (NSP II) mission, currently navigate the INSV Tarini through a gruelling global circumnavigation. Singh described their journey as a “beacon of Nari Shakti” (women’s power), highlighting their unwavering determination and composure amid extreme maritime conditions.
“Their resilience, calm demeanour, and meticulous approach while covering thousands of nautical miles in harsh conditions exemplify the exceptional capabilities of women today,” he said.

The officers are currently sailing in the South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 450 nautical miles from their last port of call, Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, en route to Cape Town, South Africa. Singh commended their remarkable milestones, including crossing Point Nemo, the world’s most isolated waters, and navigating the Drake Passage, one of the most treacherous maritime routes.
The Navika Sagar Parikrama II initiative, spearheaded by the Indian Navy, aims to promote women’s participation in maritime and defence sectors, fostering leadership and self-reliance. Before embarking on their journey from Goa on October 2, 2024, the officers underwent extensive training in navigation, weather management, and ocean survival techniques.
The Ministry of Defence emphasized its ongoing efforts to enhance women’s representation in the armed forces. Initiatives such as permanent commission opportunities, increased intake at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA), and leadership roles in combat and aviation branches reflect the government’s commitment to inclusivity in national security.
