On the 21st of February 2024, the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) endorsed the procurement of over 200 extended-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for the Indian Navy. This move signifies a crucial step towards enhancing the country’s maritime security. The extended-range missiles, a joint development between India and Russia, will arm the Indian Navy with an advanced weapon system capable of targeting distant locations, thereby improving the nation’s defensive capabilities against potential threats from both regional and extra-regional actors.
Furthermore, the potential export of the BrahMos missile system to countries like the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations highlights the growing global recognition of Indian defence technology. These strategic moves will not only contribute to the nation’s strategic interests in the region but also create employment opportunities in the Indian defence industry, including the MSME sector.
