Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan is on a four-day official visit to Armenia to strengthen defence cooperation. The visit comes as Yerevan increasingly looks to India for military modernisation.

Gen. Chauhan arrived in Armenia on February 1 with a defence delegation. He was given a ceremonial welcome by the Armenian Armed Forces in Yerevan, including a Guard of Honour and a military band.

The Indian delegation thanked Armenia for the warm reception. Officials said it reflected the growing defence partnership and long-standing friendship between the two countries.
During the visit, Gen. Chauhan will meet Armenia’s civil and military leadership. He is also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Sources in the defence and security establishment said discussions are focused on deepening bilateral defence ties. The aim is to expand long-term cooperation in key strategic areas.

According to the sources, potential areas of cooperation include surveillance, space, cybersecurity, strategic communication, defence systems, and training.

Regarding potential new procurements, the sources said the visit is meant to assess Armenia’s requirements and match them with India’s capabilities.

Armenia has, in recent years, bought a wide range of defence equipment from India. It includes artillery guns, multi-barrel rocket launchers, air defence systems, sniper rifles, weapon-locating radars, munitions and anti-drone systems.

As reported earlier, Armenia has also shown interest in Indian missile systems. It includes the indigenous Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.

Armenia has emerged as a major destination for Indian defence exports.
