DRDO unveiled next-generation armoured platforms

Two next-generation armoured platforms developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were unveiled on Saturday, marking a push to equip the armed forces with more versatile and indigenous combat systems.

The Advanced Armoured Platforms — in tracked and wheeled variants — have been designed by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) to meet evolving battlefield requirements. DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat unveiled them at the laboratory complex in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra.

According to the Defence Ministry, the platforms are built around a modular design that allows multiple operational roles, ranging from infantry combat to reconnaissance and support missions. Both variants are fitted with an indigenously developed 30 mm crewless turret, aimed at enhancing survivability while maintaining high firepower.

The turret is paired with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and is capable of launching anti-tank guided missiles, significantly expanding the platform’s engagement envelope. Officials said the systems are designed to strike a balance between mobility, protection and lethality in diverse combat scenarios.

Powered by high-output engines with automatic transmission, the vehicles offer a high power-to-weight ratio and improved speed. They are capable of negotiating steep gradients and difficult terrain, while modular blast and ballistic protection provide STANAG Level 4 and 5 safety standards.

The platforms are also amphibious, with hydrojet propulsion enabling better performance in water crossings—a feature expected to add operational flexibility in riverine and littoral environments.

With an indigenous content of around 65 per cent — targeted to rise to 90 per cent — the programme underscores India’s ongoing efforts to reduce its dependence on imports of critical defence technologies.

Manufacturing has been undertaken in partnership with private industry, including Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, along with a network of MSMEs. The collaboration, officials said, reflects the growing role of the domestic industry in strengthening India’s defence production ecosystem.
