The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Monday signed a Rs 586 crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited for the procurement of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks, marking a step towards the indigenisation of critical subsystems for armoured platforms.
The indigenously developed APUs will provide an alternate source of electrical power for key tank systems, including the fire control system, firing circuit and gun stabilisation system, as well as other onboard equipment, stated the Defence Ministry statement.
The induction of these systems is expected to strengthen the operational readiness, reliability and sustainability of the Army’s mechanised formations.
The procurement is being undertaken under the Make-II category, which involves industry-led research and development. The Ministry described the contract as an example of translating indigenous innovation into production and operational induction.
The agreement is also aligned with the government’s broader push for Aatmanirbharta in defence and the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision. It is intended to support the development of a resilient and self-reliant domestic defence industry, while expanding Indian industry’s role in the production of critical equipment for armoured platforms.
The Ministry did not specify the number of APUs being procured, the delivery schedule or the detailed technical specifications of the systems under the contract.
