Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Sunday assumed charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, who retired after a distinguished tenure at the helm of the Indian Navy.

Before he was appointed Navy Chief, Admiral Swaminathan was serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, one of the Navy’s most critical operational commands.

In his first remarks after taking over as the Navy Chief, Admiral Swaminathan outlined his priorities for the force, stressing continuity in the Navy’s drive towards greater integration with the other services and enhanced self-reliance in defence production.

“Jointness, aatmanirbharta and indigenisation will continue to remain our key focus areas,” he said.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead the service, the Admiral said he looked forward to working alongside naval personnel across ranks.

“I’m extremely grateful to have this opportunity to work with the men and women of the Indian Navy, whom I consider the finest professionals anywhere in the world,” he said.
He also underlined the importance of personnel welfare, stating that the well-being, professional development, and personal growth of sailors and officers would remain a key focus during his tenure.

Addressing the media, Admiral Swaminathan described the prevailing maritime security environment as increasingly complex and uncertain, and said maintaining operational readiness would be his foremost priority.

“The Indian Navy stands vigilant to protect national interests wherever they are and is very actively deployed in a regional security environment that continues to remain challenging, complex, unpredictable and uncertain,” he said.

Nearly Four Decades of Service

A specialist in communication and electronic warfare, Admiral Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, he has held a wide range of operational, instructional and staff appointments.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he has also attended the College of Naval Warfare at Karanja, the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Shrivenham, United Kingdom, and the US Naval War College in Rhode Island.

The Admiral has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.

During his career, he commanded several frontline warships, including aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, missile corvette INS Kulish, and missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash.

As a Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, where he played a key role in strengthening the Navy’s training architecture. He was also instrumental in setting up the Indian Naval Safety Team, an initiative aimed at enhancing operational safety standards across the force.

His appointment comes at a time when the Navy is expanding its operational footprint in the Indian Ocean Region, pushing ahead with indigenous shipbuilding programmes and deepening integration with the Army and Air Force under the government’s theatre command reforms. With a strong operational background and extensive experience in training and force development, Admiral Swaminathan now takes charge of the service as it navigates an increasingly contested maritime environment.
