The Defence Ministry on Thursday signed a Rs 425-crore contract with Bharat Forge Limited for the supply of 12 indigenous marine gas turbine generator (GTG) sets for the Indian Navy, marking a significant step toward developing domestic capability for a critical warship power-generation system.

The contract, signed under the Buy (Indian) category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP)-2020 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on Friday, envisages the procurement of 12 sets of 1.25 MW marine gas turbine generators with a minimum indigenous content of 60 per cent.

According to the Defence Ministry, the generators form the backbone of modern naval combatants, providing power to critical combat systems, advanced weapons and onboard sensors. The Ministry said the agreement represents a major milestone in creating an indigenous manufacturing ecosystem for marine gas turbine generators, a capability that has so far remained largely import-dependent.

The five-year programme also marks Bharat Forge’s entry into the marine gas turbine segment. It is expected that the first indigenous gas turbine-based power plant will be installed on the Indian Navy’s Kolkata-class destroyer warships.

As part of the project, the Pune-headquartered company will establish a dedicated integration and testing facility for marine GTGs. It will also participate in design and development programmes for higher-capacity power plants and propulsion gas turbines aimed at meeting future requirements of the armed forces.

Bharat Forge said the initiative would help build domestic capabilities for the manufacture, maintenance and overhaul of gas turbines and gas turbine generators, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and ensuring greater operational self-reliance for the Navy.

The contract comes amid the government’s broader push to deepen indigenisation in defence production and expand the domestic industrial base for complex naval systems under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
