In a significant boost to India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a key industrial agreement with French engine maker Safran Aircraft Engines to produce forged Inconel components for the high-performance LEAP series of aircraft engines.
The agreement was formalized at the 55th Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, where Abdul Salam, General Manager of HAL’s LCA Division, and Dominique Dupuy, Vice President (Purchasing) at Safran Aircraft Engines, signed the deal, according to HAL’s statement. It follows earlier commitments between the two companies, including a Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2023 and a forging contract finalised in February of this year.
The partnership marks a strategic step in deepening the aerospace supply chain under India’s “Make in India” initiative, particularly in high-value aerospace metallurgy and component manufacturing. Safran is leveraging HAL’s advanced forging capabilities — particularly its state-of-the-art ring rolling facility in Bengaluru — to produce near-net shape Inconel parts, a critical alloy used in high-temperature engine components.
“This long-standing partnership is now moving into an advanced phase. We’re proud to contribute to the LEAP engine’s global supply chain,” said D K Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL.
Dominique Dupuy added, “HAL remains a key partner in our global sourcing strategy. This agreement strengthens our industrial presence in India and supports the ramp-up of LEAP engines for the booming civil aviation market while also laying the groundwork for future military engine components.”
The LEAP engine, developed by CFM International — a joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace — powers new-generation narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX. With global demand for single-aisle jets growing, the need for reliable, cost-effective component production is surging.
Safran’s expanding footprint in India includes multiple ventures and facilities, and the new agreement with HAL further anchors its commitment to building an aerospace manufacturing ecosystem within the country.
Both companies are also exploring technology co-development for additional LEAP engine components, signalling a deeper level of technological collaboration in precision aerospace manufacturing.
