Operation Meghdoot: The Strategy That Changed Everything

“India’s control over Siachen prevents a handshake between Pakistan and China over the top of her head,” says Nitin A Gokhale, Editor-in-Chief and author of the bestselling novel, ‘Beyond NJ 9842: The Siachen Saga‘.

On 13th April 1984, India made a decisive move. Through Operation Meghdoot, Indian forces launched a pre-emptive strike to secure the Siachen Glacier — before Pakistan could occupy it. That one decision ensured India gained control of the heights that dominate the region, a strategic advantage that continues even 42 years later.

What makes Siachen so critical today? As explained in the conversation with Nitin A. Gokhale, India’s presence on the Saltoro Ridge acts as a geographical barrier. It prevents Pakistan, located to the west, from linking up with China to the east.

Despite advancements in technology— drones, satellites, and surveillance systems — the importance of boots on the ground remains unchanged. Monitoring from afar is not enough, Nitin reiterates. The extreme terrain, harsh weather, and strategic heights demand a constant physical military presence. Without it, any withdrawal could create an opportunity for adversaries to move in faster than India can respond.

Operation Meghdoot also established a larger military lesson: pre-emptive and proactive action can deliver long-term strategic gains. By acting first, India didn’t just secure territory — it shaped the battlefield for decades to come.

From logistical challenges in 1984 to evolving threats today, Siachen continues to test endurance, strategy, and resolve. But one thing remains clear — India’s early move ensured that the highest battlefield in the world remains firmly under its control.
