India and China have agreed to continue using diplomatic and military channels to address outstanding issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), while reaffirming that peace and tranquillity on the border remain essential for the overall development of bilateral ties.
The understanding was reached during the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs, held in New Delhi on August 6. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday that the two sides held “frank discussions” and reviewed the overall situation along the LAC.
According to the MEA, both countries agreed to use existing mechanisms, including the WMCC, local commander-level meetings, and other established diplomatic and military channels, to resolve pending issues and prevent misunderstanding or miscalculation along the frontier.
The meeting also reviewed the outcomes of the 24th round of Special Representatives’ (SR-Level) talks. Officials held detailed discussions on boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism-building and trans-border cooperation.
India reiterated the need for an early meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on trans-border rivers. It stressed the importance of timely sharing of technical details relating to upstream projects.
The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the MEA, while the Chinese side was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department in China’s Foreign Ministry.
