CRPF: The Force At The Heart Of India’s Internal Security

0

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is one of India’s most widely deployed security forces, operating across theatres ranging from Maoist-affected forests to the streets of Kashmir. Yet its role, history and organisational structure are often less understood than those of the Indian Army or state police.

In this Defence Mantra Classroom Edition, Nitin A. Gokhale unpacks the CRPF’s evolution, responsibilities and place in India’s security architecture with Neelanjana.

Raised in 1939 as the Crown Representative’s Police, the force was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force in 1949 as independent India developed its internal security institutions. Its history includes significant episodes of courage, including the Hot Springs clash with Chinese troops in 1959 and the defence of Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch in 1965. The discussion also examines the CRPF’s contribution during the 1971 war and its subsequent deployments in Punjab and other conflict-affected regions.

The conversation explains how the CRPF differs from the Army and state police, why it is deployed to assist states during serious law-and-order situations, and how it supports elections, counter-insurgency operations and disaster response.

A closer look at its specialised units reveals the breadth of its operational capabilities. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) is trained to respond to riots and public disorder, while the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) specialises in counter-insurgency and guerrilla warfare, particularly in Maoist-affected areas. The episode also explores the role of Valley Quick Action Teams and the CRPF’s women’s battalions.

Finally, the discussion examines recruitment, training, leadership and the demands of serving in a force that can be deployed wherever the country needs it.

From its colonial origins to its contemporary responsibilities, the CRPF’s story reflects the changing demands of India’s internal security.

Watch this Defence Mantra Classroom Edition to understand the force, its history and the people who serve in it.
