Some areas where key questions still remain include trends in the jointness of the theater commands, if any; the relationship between the new commands and supporting organizations; and the role of the CMC as the PLA evolves. First, although the services are now more equal in terms of organizational structure and hierarchy, the new commanders and political commissars of the five theater commands still all come from the ground forces.
