In the second part of the 2-part series of Defence Mantra on the last two Sundays of 2024, Nitin A. Gokhale and Neelanjana Banerjee talk about how India is poised in the defence sector in 2025.
The geopolitics of the world make India a profitable market, partially due to its own stability as well as because several parts of the world are in turmoil.
Significant advancements in the defence sector can be expected by India, focusing on modernisation, increased production, and strategic collaborations.
- Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarines: India has approved the construction of two nuclear-powered attack submarines, marking the beginning of a series targeting six such vessels. This initiative, with an estimated cost of $5.4 billion, aims to enhance India’s naval strength amidst growing regional challenges.
- Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCV): The Indian Army is progressing with Project Ranjit, which involves the development of next-generation tanks to replace the aging T-72 fleet. The project is expected to advance through prototype development and testing phases in 2025, with induction planned by 2030.
- Enhanced Role of Private Defense Suppliers: There is a growing emphasis on increasing the involvement of private companies in defense procurement. Industry leaders advocate for policy reforms to facilitate greater private sector participation, aiming to enhance efficiency and innovation in defense manufacturing.
- Aerospace Expansion: Companies like Larsen & Toubro (L&T) are expanding their aerospace divisions to capitalize on India’s burgeoning private space market, aligning with government initiatives to involve private entities in the space industry.
- International Partnerships: India is expected to continue strengthening defense ties with key global players, including the United States, to counter regional challenges and enhance its defense capabilities. Collaborations may involve joint development and production of defense technologies.
These anticipated developments reflect India’s strategic focus on modernising its defense forces, enhancing domestic production capabilities, and fostering international partnerships to address evolving security challenges.
