Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Monday, a day after being briefed by Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, on the force’s operational preparedness. The developments come in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, prompting the government to weigh retaliatory options.
The security review is part of a series of top-level consultations following the attack, which has significantly escalated tensions between India and Pakistan. India has already taken several measures in response, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and downgrading diplomatic ties with Islamabad.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council is set to hold a closed-door meeting on the rising tensions following a request by Pakistan for an emergency session.
On the ground, the situation remains volatile. Pakistani troops reportedly engaged in unprovoked firing across eight forward sectors along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night, marking the 11th consecutive night of ceasefire violations. Indian forces responded in kind, according to officials.
“During the night of 04 -05 May 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in J&K. Indian Army responded promptly and proportionately”.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who addressed the situation on Sunday, assured a strong and decisive response to those threatening India’s security.
“As Defence Minister, it is my responsibility to safeguard the nation’s borders alongside our soldiers and to deliver a fitting response to anyone who dares to attack us,” he said.
He also underscored Prime Minister Modi’s leadership qualities, highlighting his resolve and readiness to act decisively in the nation’s interest.
“You are all familiar with PM Modi’s commitment and courage. I want to assure you that under his leadership, the response will align with the people’s will,” he added.
