The Ministry of Defence has notified the sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) covering 405 strategically important defence items with an estimated business potential of Rs 3,070 crore, further expanding the push to reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.

The Department of Defence Production (DDP) said the list includes Line Replaceable Units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components and raw materials. Of the 405 items, 16 are for the Indian Coast Guard and 389 are linked to Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs).

The latest list covers a wide range of platforms and systems. These include the Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Utility Helicopter, Su-30MKI, Light Combat Aircraft and AL-31FP engine. Armoured platforms such as the T-72, T-90 and BMP-II are also covered.

Missile systems, including Konkurs-M, Invar, and MRSAM, figure in the list. Critical defence electronics such as radars, sonars, fire-control systems and satellite communication systems have also been included. High Explosive Anti-Tank ammunition and other critical equipment are part of the list.

The detailed list has been placed on the SRIJAN Defence Portal, with an indicative timeline for indigenisation assigned to each item. Once developed domestically, the items will be procured from Indian industry.

DPSUs and the Coast Guard will pursue indigenisation through various routes, including the Make procedure and in-house development. Domestic industry, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), will be involved in the process.

The latest PIL comes as the government seeks to widen the role of Indian companies in defence production and create a larger domestic supply chain for critical components and systems.

The DDP launched the SRIJAN Defence Portal in August 2020 to connect DPSUs and Service Headquarters with Indian industry, including MSMEs and start-ups, for indigenous development and production.

The portal has so far facilitated the offer of more than 33,000 defence items for indigenisation by DPSUs and Service Headquarters, as of June 2026. This includes 5,012 items notified under the first five Positive Indigenisation Lists.

More than 15,700 defence items have been successfully indigenised, resulting in estimated import substitution worth about Rs 9,000 crore over the past five years.

DPSUs have also placed procurement orders, including for in-house production, worth around Rs 10,000 crore with domestic vendors up to March 2026.

The sixth PIL is expected to create further opportunities for Indian manufacturers while strengthening the country’s defence industrial base and reducing reliance on imported components.
