Lt Gen Sengupta, flags off 'Surya Green Himalayan Odyssey,' an 11-day Electric Vehicle (EV) Car Expedition in Kasauli

The Indian Army has flagged off an 11-day electric vehicle expedition from Himachal Pradesh’s Kasauli to Leh, seeking to showcase the potential of clean mobility solutions in some of the country’s toughest terrains while reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The ‘Surya Green Himalayan Odyssey’, an expedition covering 1,663 kilometres across the Shivalik foothills, high-altitude mountain passes and remote frontier areas, was flagged off on May 12 by Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command.

Addressing participants at the flagging-off ceremony, Lt Gen Sengupta said, “Brave hearts move on the green path, protecting the Earth.”

Organised by the Indian Army’s Surya Command in collaboration with Tata Motors, Himachal Tourism, the Leh Tourism Department and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the expedition aims to demonstrate the reliability and practicality of electric vehicles in demanding operational environments.

The convoy will travel through some of the most challenging stretches of the Himalayas before culminating in Leh, carrying a message that extends beyond adventure and endurance to highlight the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainable transport solutions.

Army officials said the initiative reflects the force’s efforts to integrate emerging technologies with responsible practices without compromising operational effectiveness. The expedition seeks to underline that preparedness and sustainability are not mutually exclusive and can advance together even in extreme conditions.

As electric vehicles navigate steep mountain roads, rugged landscapes, and high-altitude passes, the exercise is also expected to provide insights into the performance of clean mobility platforms in difficult terrain and under adverse climatic conditions.

The Army said the campaign, themed “Go Green with Olive Green”, embodies its belief that national security and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

The journey from Kasauli to Leh, officials noted, is intended to symbolise not only endurance and resilience but also a forward-looking approach that embraces innovation and cleaner technologies for the future.
