A formal handover ceremony marked the transition of command between two Indian Army battalions serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Thursday.

The outgoing INDBATT XXV, comprising troops from the Madras Regiment, officially transferred authority to the incoming INDBATT XXVI of the Grenadiers Regiment (Indian Army) in a ceremonial event held at the battalion headquarters in UNIFIL’s eastern sector.

The incoming INDBATT XXVI now assumes the mantle with a renewed commitment to the UN mandate. Notably, this rotation includes a major milestone for India’s UN peacekeeping legacy: the deployment of a Female Engagement Team (FET) for the first time within an Indian battalion in Lebanon. The inclusion of the FET reflects India’s strong support for gender equality and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

The event was carried out with military precision, featuring a parade, ceremonial flag exchange, and drill displays that highlighted the professionalism of the Indian Army.

Senior UNIFIL officers, including Sector East Commander Brigadier General Ricardo Esteban Cabrejos, attended alongside representatives from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), local government officials, and community leaders—signifying the strong partnership between Indian peacekeepers and the local population.

Over the past year, INDBATT XXV earned praise for its operational discipline and community engagement. Their contributions included daily patrolling, humanitarian support, and sustained cooperation with civilians under UNIFIL’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) framework. The Indian Army’s efforts significantly contributed to local stability and were commended by UN leadership and local stakeholders alike.

The FET is expected to play a vital role in deepening engagement with local women and fostering inclusive dialogue and trust within communities—enhancing the effectiveness and reach of peacekeeping operations.

Brig Gen Cabrejos praised both battalions for their unwavering professionalism and the trust they continue to build among local residents. He expressed full confidence that INDBATT XXVI would uphold the legacy of excellence established by their predecessors.

India remains one of the largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions globally, and its continued leadership in Lebanon stands as a testament to its enduring commitment to international peace and security.
